Bait and combos

In this section we will be discussing different baits, presentations and applications.  We will also have a look at different combinations that can be used on days when you are looking for something unique to get a fish to commit to your bait.

Bloodworm

Bloodworm, or the smaller Bloods affectionately called "baby bloodworm", is surely one of the best all-round baits available to the rock and surf angler.  Kob, Steenbras, Belman and Galjoen will not swim past a well-presented bloodworm bait.

Hard to beat fresh, live sandprawn! A favourite bait for steenbras and belman especially!

White mussels can be dug up at lowtide on sandy beaches.  Great Galjoen bait, with Kob and various reef species also being partial to it.

Wonderworm- fresh or salted . excellent choice for galjoen, belman and steenbras.

Fresh squid- or tjokka as commonly know is a staple bait for Kob.  Really pricey but absolutely worth the price when fresh.

Redbait needs no introduction. Galjoen and Musselcracker food.

fresh, live mullet- Kob, Shad and non edibles will be the target species.

sardines has to be the most widely used bait on our coast! the fresher the better.  When buying a box of sardines, of the box and check for bloodied ice that would indicate that it has defrosted previously.  You want the fresh stuff!

a Live Strepie/karenteen-brilliant as live, or dead bait.

a white-mussel and Pink-prawn bait presentation on a small circle hook, for edible fishing.

sand prawn presentation, and a small sardine belly and tjokka strip, also on a small (2/0) circle hook,

a Yellowtail Head, wrapped with the yellowtail cuttlets, and tightly bound together with bait cotton to for a streamlined bait, is always a deadly option for the bigger non edible species like Bronzies, Black Rays and Cow sharks- to mention a few.

Pink Prawn is a excellent all round scratching bait, especially for smaller species like Bronze bream, blacktail, Wildeperd and Belman.

Crayfish is expensive, but a very succesfull bait, especially for Cracker and Weskus steenbras.
